Original Ricola is produced today almost exactly as it was in the 1930's when Emil Richterich, owner of a Swiss confectionery shop in the village of Laufen, first developed the recipe. This is why Original Ricola has a rough cube shape, while all other Ricola flavors are made on newer, more modern machines that produce a smooth oval shape. This original recipe launched Ricola, with a simple philosophy of producing natural, herbal products that are both beneficial and good tasting. The name Ricola is a derivative of Richterich, Company and Laufen. Ricola has been calming coughs and soothing sore throats for more than 70 years. Today, Ricola is made in many different flavors both with and without sugar, yet all contain the same mixture of naturally grown Swiss mountain herbs pioneered by Emil Richterich. The products continue to be produced in Laufen and are exported to some 60 countries around the world.
