Schiff Lutein

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in plant leaves, and are especially rich in spinach, kale and green leafy vegetables. Lutein and zeaxanthin are found throughout the body, but they are concentrated in the retina of the eye. The part of the retina that receives the most light (directly opposite the pupil) is called the macula. Lutein and zeaxanthin localize in the macular region of the retina, and are called Macular Pigment.

Zeaxanthin is preferably found in the very center of the macula, whereas lutein is found throughout the macula. Both lutein and zeaxanthin are antioxidants with an affinity for quenching the detrimental effects of light on tissues. Thus, lutein and zeaxanthin are exactly where they need to be to protect the retina from damage caused by light.

During normal aging, levels of lutein and zeaxanthin in the macula decrease. Unlike most other eye health products, Schiff’s Lutein contains zeaxanthin, and in a 1:5 ratio with lutein, as found in foodstuffs and the body. In fact, one tablet of Schiff’s Lutein contains as much lutein and zeaxanthin as a healthy daily diet rich in vegetables.
