The promotion of healthy blood cholesterol has become a national obsession
resulting in the sale of billions of dollars worth of cholesterol lowering drugs,
mainly of the statin type. Lowering blood cholesterol with statin drugs in groups
of individuals that are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and stroke is
documented to be cost effective and appropriate in medical practice. What may
be questioned about these drugs is the use as a first line option to lower blood
cholesterol without paying appropriate attention to lifestyle adjustments and
nutritional interventions to promote a healthy blood cholesterol level. The
statin group of drugs causes common side effects and, on occasion, they cause
serious adverse effects including, skin rashes, liver problems and severe damage
to muscles that can result in death. Dr. Holt believes that the first line option
to deal with cholesterol problems involves lifestyle change with specific dietary
adjustments and the use of dietary supplements or foods that are known to lower
bad forms of cholesterol (low density lipoproteins, LDL) and increase good forms
of cholesterol (high density lipoproteins, HDL).
Drugs used to lower blood cholesterol exert most of their effects on lowering
LDL only. Recently, drugs have been developed that may both lower LDL and increase
HDL. That said, natural agents are more versatile at raising HDL than modern
drugs. Furthermore, natural substances that provide nutritional support to promote
a healthy blood cholesterol are safe and they not share the adverse event profile
of commonly used cholesterol lowering drugs and they are often less expensive.
The manufacturers of statin drugs are fully aware that these drugs deplete
the body stores of co-enzyme Q10. Furthermore, statin drugs are often prescribed
to people with the metabolic Syndrome X for their disorders of blood cholesterol,
but individuals with Syndrome X may often have underlying liver disease due
to fatty liver. This means that a large proportion of the target population
using statin drugs have disordered liver function and the commonest reason for
an individual to stop taking a statin drug is liver toxicity. Therefore, common
sense would question the widespread use of statin drugs in people with the metabolic
Syndrome X and one may appreciate why so many people on statin drugs have to
stop these medications because they develop laboratory abnormalities that signal
the presence of liver damage. This information has been brushed under the carpet
by the pharmaceutical industry.
There are several compelling reasons why one would elect to take a safe, natural
and simple approach to controlling blood cholesterol. Furthermore, the risk
of heart disease and stroke is not all about cholesterol alone. Elevated blood
homocysteine and body inflammation are important independent risk factors for
cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol lowering drugs do not address the problem
of elevated blood homocysteine. Many of the 70 million Americans with the metabolic
Syndrome X have elevated blood cholesterol related to insulin resistance and,
again, drugs used to lower cholesterol do not address insulin resistance.
Cholesterol Naturally™ is a dietary supplement to promote
healthy blood cholesterol and a healthy blood homocysteine level. It contains
botanical agents that may partially modify aspects of the normal body function
of an inflammatory response. There is no complex, synergistic formula for promoting
a healthy blood cholesterol that has the versatility of Cholesterol
Naturally™ which has been referred to as Ultimate Cholesaid.
