What is GripeWater? - GripeWater is an old formula that has
been used for over 100 years throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, India, and the
Caribbean to remedy the discomforts of babies with colic, gas, teething and
hiccups. Previously GripeWater was being imported to the states but it did not
gain approval because many of the formulas had alcohol in them. Bliss By Mom
introduced all- natural, alcohol-free Baby's Bliss GripeWater to the American
market in 1999.
What's in GripeWater? - The active ingredients in Baby's Bliss
GripeWater are fennel, ginger, and sodium bicarbonate. All three have been known
to be beneficial in easing nausea and pain due to baby stomach gas and other
colic symptoms. Fennel and ginger are also effective for easing the discomforts
of infant teething. Baby's Bliss GripeWater does NOT contain any of the following:
Gluten, Soy, Starch, Dairy products, Wheat, Yeast, Dill, Chamomile, Alcohol,
Parabens, Artificial colors, Artificial flavors, Binders, Sucrose (table sugar),
Fillers, Petroleum-based products.
Why does GripeWater contain Sodium Bicarbonate? - There are
two main reasons why Bliss by Mom includes Sodium Bicarbonate in Baby's Bliss
GripeWater. First, the Sodium Bicarbonate acts to balance and maintain the Ph
of the GripeWater. Second, the Sodium Bicarbonate acts in conjunction with the
Ginger and Fennel to facilitate and aid digestion. Its properties to reduce
gastric irritations are well known by Doctors and Pharmacists.
Is the Sodium Bicarbonate safe to give my baby? - The Sodium
Bicarbonate used in the GripeWater was specifically formulated for infants and
babies and the amount contained is minimal (14 mg or less than 1% of the daily
recommended amount for Infants). All ingredients in the Baby's Bliss GripeWater
are listed on the FDA's "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS) list.
Sodium Bicarbonate is also included in the GRAS list as well as the FDA Inactive
Ingredients Guide. Sodium Bicarbonate's properties to reduce gastric irritations
are well known by Doctors and Pharmacists.
Isn't Fructose sugar? - Fructose is not sugar. Fructose is
a food based sweetener that is appropriate for small children and metabolized
slowly. Sugar is truly sucrose and therefore Baby's Bliss GripeWater is sugar
free.
Is Baby's Bliss GripeWater FDA approved? - Baby's Bliss Gripewater
is not regulated by the FDA as it is not considered a "medicine",
but a nutritional supplement rather. The product is however manufactured in
an FDA approved lab in Washington State.
Is Baby's Bliss GripeWater safe? - Baby's Bliss GripeWater
is manufactured by an FDA approved laboratory which follows strict manufacturing
standards, guidelines, and procedures for quality and safety. All the ingredients
used are listed on the FDA's "Generally Recognized As Safe" (GRAS)
list. The ingredients are carefully selected and must meet our quality assurance
requirements prior to their use. After the product has been manufactured it
is held until additional analytical and microbiology tests have been conducted
to assure the safety of the product. Only when a "Certificate of Analysis"
has been issued, the product is then released for sale. Baby's Bliss GripeWater
is also protected by a safety seal.
Can my baby be allergic to the ingredients? - Like any foods
that are introduced for the first time to a baby there may be an allergic reaction
such as hives, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability. If there is a history of food
allergies in either parent then you may want to give half the dose.
When should I give it? - Baby's Bliss GripeWater is given
as needed, and may be given no more than once every 4 hours in a 24-hour period.
NEVER exceed dosage and keep out of the reach of children.
Should I give it as a preventative measure or just when needed? -
It is only necessary to give it as needed when you recognize that your baby
is starting to become uncomfortable as it generally works quickly.
How does it help with teething? - Babies cry a lot when teething
take in more air which makes them gassy. Baby's Bliss can often relieve them
from the gas discomfort making them cry.
How do I give it? - Baby's Bliss GripeWater may be administered
orally by a dropper or directly in a bottle, prior, during, or after feedings.
Please keep in mind that the baby must consume all of the formula in order to
receive the full dose. Most babies will need it after feedings when they get
gassy from eating too fast or gulping in air while feeding. It is a good idea
to wait thirty minutes after a feeding to administer GripeWater as it will help
the food digest. If given too soon, the baby may vomit because he is too full
or the ingredients don't mix well with the stomach contents. If a baby is not
able to complete a feeding due to gas he or she may need it prior to the feeding.
You will know what works best for your baby through giving it at different times.
Can I give half the dose and more often? - It is recommended
that you follow the instructions on the bottle. You may need to give it more
often as you are only giving half the dose and therefore not getting the results
your baby needs.
Why can't we give it more than 6 times in 24 hours? - This
is Bliss by Mom's recommendation. As with any product that contains sodium bicarbonate
it is not safe to give more than the recommended dose, especially for babies.
How long will it take before my baby feels better? - Baby's
Bliss has been known to work in 5-20 minutes – no kidding!
Can I give it with mylicon drops or other drugs? - By combining
Baby's Bliss with other products it is difficult to determine which one is providing
relief for your baby. Roshan Kaderali suggests giving Baby's Bliss on its own
to see what the results are. This way if your baby gets relief, then you can
discontinue other medications. You may want to consult your pediatrician first
as some babies need to remain on Zantac and do fairly well with both but first
try Baby's Bliss on its own to determine the results.
Will it work for my baby? - In a recent survey 85% of parents
said they would recommend Baby's Bliss GripeWater. However, there are cases
when the product didn't work for a baby and that may be because the baby was
allergic to the ingredients, was uncomfortable for other reasons or the liquid
was not administered as recommended.
Will my baby's bowel movements be easier to pass? - Some reports
indicate that some babies have had less trouble with their bowel movements and
were not as constipated as previously.
How long does it last? - Baby's Bliss GripeWater has a 2-year
shelf life when stored at room temperature. Bliss by Mom recommends discarding
it six weeks after opening it due to reduced potency and an increase in the
potential for bacteria.
Does it need to be refrigerated? - No. Baby's Bliss GripeWater
contains natural preservatives making refrigeration unnecessary.
Is there any reason I shouldn't give it to my baby? - The
product should not be given to babies under 7 pounds as small baby may react
to ingredients differently. Neither should it be given if there is a history
of food allergies in the family. Do not administer the product if your baby
experiences increased discomfort or changes that you are not familiar with after
taking Baby's Bliss GripeWater i.e. baby becomes more irritable after taking
a dose, or breaks out in hives or a rash. Contact your doctor if the baby experiences
any of these things. Baby's Bliss GripeWater should not be given if there is
a history of kidney failure, heart disease or renal problems, as the product
contains sodium bicarbonate. The amount of sodium bicarbonate is small and most
likely will be harmless, but you must check with your doctor if either of the
latter conditions exists.
